Lois Berse joined Island Women after hearing about the organization from her neighbor, Cathy Chester. Lois had adopted a nest through the Pleasure Island Turtle Project but wanted to get move involved. “She told me about the different things Island Women does,” Lois recalled. “She said it was ok if you didn’t live on the Island.”
Since joining Island Women in September 2022, Lois has met a lot of nice people and volunteered in many ways. “I love doing Bingo with Cathy,” she said. She volunteers to help with the pancake breakfast once a month at the senior center, and she’s on the bag committee. In fact, Lois was instrumental in bringing on the Aquarium at the highest sponsorship level for the Centennial bag. It is the first time the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher will be listed as a sponsor on the bag.
When she meets new members, Lois encourages them to get involved. She tells them “you can be a member of Island Women and do nothing or you can get involved” in activities in a small or large way. “It’s up to you,” she said.
She thinks being an active member of the organization is the way to go.
