Committee Spotlight: SE Committee

The S.H.E committee has a new acronym, a new chair, and a new approach in 2025.

With the H (the health portion) recently combined with the Member Care Committee, the newly named S.E. committee now focuses on social and enrichment activities. According to Susan Hughes, the new chair as of January, the committee will offer a wide range of activities over the next year. (Don’t be surprised if you see the A for activities added to the committee’s name soon.) One thing that will stay the same is its support for local businesses.

The committee’s first gathering is a progressive Sip and Shop on February 12. From 5 pm to 8 pm, Island Women and their guests are invited to visit Salty Chic and Sumthin’ Beachie. The shops will offer snacks, mimosas, and a special discount during this after-hours shopping event.

Other activities in the works include cooking classes or demonstrations, food and drink pairings, hikes, craft events, and home decorating workshops.

When Susan took over the committee, she asked the members. “’ What are you hearing from people?’” she said. The response was to give Island Women members different options. Now the committee is looking to host events that offer a range of prices and activities. “We want to give people options,” Susan said. “Something may not be your thing one month, but maybe the next month the activity will interest you.”

Susan has been a member of Island Women since 2019, but due to a range of reasons, only started getting involved in August 2024. “I would consider myself a new member as far as involvement,” she said. When the chair position became available, she took it, despite working full-time. “I was hesitant at first because I didn’t really know anybody. But I decided to do this as a way to dive in and meet people. So far it’s been great.”

The S.E. committee meets on the last Wednesday of every month. Susan invites anyone who wants to get involved to attend. Meeting details are on the Island Women calendar.
