Mural #17: Kraken
By Jill Webb and Dave Sinclair

Picture_Kraken
This mural celebrates the legendary sea monster the Kraken.  It was said be a huge, many armed, creature that could reach as high as the top of sailing ship’s main mast. They would attack a ship by wrapping their arms around and turning the ship into the sea. Although a mythological creature, the Kraken was based on something real, the Giant Squid or Colossal Octopus.

It is thought the Kraken was based more on a Giant Squid as they are more aggressive and more likely to come to the surface of the ocean. The largest ever squid was over 40 feet long with eyes the size of dinner plates, the largest in the animal kingdom and where the Kraken legend may have come from.

Today it is known as a giant octopus or sea monster and has appeared in the movies "Pirates of the Caribbean", "20 Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" and "Clash of the Titans".
